Sister Wives Season 19, Episode 8: Kody Admits He's 'Bitter'

If you enjoy watching a delusional man being put in his place, then this week’s episode of Sister Wives is right up your alley. While last week’s episode of the TLC hit reality show explored Kody Brown and Meri Brown’s relationship after officially dissolving their union and Christine Brown’s wedding planning with her beau, David Woolley, this week, the Christine and David lovefest continues, while Kody’s level of delusion also continues.

For a refresher, we’ve recapped all episodes of this season of Sister Wives here:

Christine’s Kids Think She’s Moving Too Fast

The show opens with Christine preparing dinner for David and her kids. She explains that some of her kids really like David, but some are a bit “on the fence” and think they’re moving too fast. She announces that she’ll be making something called “Japanese sundaes,” and the kids seem excited.

Christine also playfully asks her kids to be nice to David. Paedon and Gwendlyn have not met David yet, and Paedon will get the chance to at the dinner. Christine is determined to reinstate some of their family traditions since she left Kody, hence, the Japanese sundaes, which is a dish Meri used to prepare for them that involves chow mein noodles, chicken, cheese, soup, almonds, pineapples, etc. Doesn’t sound very appetizing, but hey, it’s their tradition.

Paedon says he’s excited to meet David, but he says he plans to lay the groundwork for how their family operates when he does, which makes Christine nervous.

“I’m really excited to meet David. I suspect that immediately, as soon as he walks in, all four of us are going to immediately insult him in some way to just establish, that’s right, this is who we are.”

Christine admits their relationship is moving fast, and the kids gently tease her when David arrives that “mom’s boyfriend is here.” The family discuss the wedding venues that Christine and David looked at, and whether any will be large enough for their extra-large party. Turns out, David has some relatives who also lived a polygamist lifestyle, so there’s a large amount of guests on his side as well.

Christine and David announce that they’ve set a date for their wedding: Oct. 21. As of last week’s episode, they still weren’t officially engaged, but they’d picked out a wedding venue and now they’ve set a date. Christine says that to get a venue in October in Moab, Utah, where they plan to marry, you need to lock it down early because things book up fast.

“So, yes, we are getting married. We have a wedding date, but we’re not engaged yet.”

Her kids continue to express their feelings about the two moving too fast. Christine also reveals that David even asked Christine’s dad for his blessing, so it looks like the wedding is on, official engagement or not.

Mykelti explains that in her family, they tease each other a lot, so David needs to be okay with that in order to fit in. Christine’s kids also talk about how strange it is to see their mom and David exhibit PDA, since they never really saw that with Christine and Kody. Still, the kids give their blessing to their upcoming wedding.

Kody To Christine: ‘Wish You Well’

In a confessional, Kody says that he expected that Christine would start dating, but that he wasn’t interested in hearing about it.

“I’m just like, ‘Wish you well.’”

The family dinner at Christine’s continues, and the kids ask if Janelle has met David yet. Christine says she plans to introduce them soon, and in a confessional, Janelle says she’s heard a lot about David, and the fact that he raised eight kids alone after his wife died (and that he still has a relationship with all of his kids—hint, hint, Kody) means he’s a quality man in her book.

Christine then drops another bombshell: She and David are planning to get matching tattoos. Paedon says he’s happy that his mom is happy enough to get a tattoo with someone, but also admits it’s weird.

In a confessional, Kody says he’s not in as much of a bad place with the Christine breakup as he once was, and he even says that they had some fun times together. Kody vacillates between saying he never loved Meri, Christine or Janelle, and reminiscing about the good times they shared. Kody needs to work this out in therapy, because the math ain’t mathin’.

He also says that because of the “betrayal” of their breakup, he doesn’t see them ever being friends, which must be a relief to Christine.

Kody Turns 55, Ponders His Life’s Purpose

After a commercial break, we return to see that it’s Kody’s 55th birthday, which is making him reflect on his life. He says that five years ago, on his birthday, he had four wives and a happy family. Now? Not so much.

“I’ve lost a sense of direction for my life.”

Kody says that while he does have a safe place with Robyn, he feels guilty because his relationships with his older kids aren’t in a good place. He says his life used to be all about his children, and without that, he feels lost. He tears up when he says that he once imagined his life would be filled with children and wives, and that even his older children would live near him with their own families.

Robyn says Kody has been very angry, upset and lost the last few years, and she’s trying her best to deal with it. She cries remembering the man and father he was when they met, and Kody vows to become that loving father he once was.

“Onward and upward with the goals in life, and making my family whole again. That’s my desire.”

After a commercial break, we cut to Christine and David going ring shopping. The juxtaposition between Kody and Christine’s lives, post-divorce, is shocking. Christine is giddily planning her future with David, while Kody is desperately contemplating his life and the choices he made that got him here.

Christine says that planning her wedding with David has made her reflect on her first marriage to Kody, and how different it feels. This time, she wants to do it the right way, with the bridal shower, the big wedding, and all the rest of it.

“When you’re a plural wife, the focus isn’t on you and it’s not supposed to be on you. It’s supposed to be on the family.”

Janelle To Kody: She’s Just Not That Into Him

Janelle and Kody have lunch to talk about some of their financial entanglements. When Kody approaches Janelle at the table, he awkardly says, “This is intimate.”

Janelle says she doesn’t trust Kody and will get a lawyer, if she has to, which sounds like the right move for her. Janelle is worried about an upcoming balloon payment they have on the Coyote Pass property. If they don’t pay it, the property could be taken from them and they would lose everything they put into it due to the family signing a “really bad” contract.

Sister Wives: Do Any Of Kody Brown’s Kids Plan To Have Polygamous Marriages?

Kody Brown has a lot of kids with his multiple wives, but do any plan to follow in his polygamous footsteps?

In a confessional, Kody has the audacity to state, “Christine left, and because of the equity in her home, she traded that for her equity in Coyote Pass. So now Coyote Pass has just got four owners [Kody, Robyn, Janelle and Meri]. How are we going to divide, yada, yada, yada. We’re still going through that process, and Janelle’s like, ‘Well, we gotta pay it off, we gotta pay it off.’ Well, I don’t feel like doing you any favors, Janelle. But I know we have to pay it off.”

Janelle asks if Kody is interested in buying her out, to which Kody responds, “Well, what about you living on the property? What about you and me?”

Um, Kody, Janelle is not interested in living on Coyote Pass and she is not interested in being married to you anymore. How is this not clear to Kody at this point? It’s infuriating, honestly.

Janelle politely tries to set him straight.

“Honey, I don’t think we even exist in the same universe anymore.”

Kody’s face drops as Janelle gives him the classic break-up speech: “I think you’re awesome and whenever we talk, I still feel that you’ve got this little hook in me or whatever, but I’ve been so happy that I don’t foresee a long-term thing for us.”

How can Kody be this surprised and hurt that Janelle doesn’t plan to live with them on Coyote Pass, or work on their relationship? The delusion never stops with Kody.

In a confessional, Janelle puts it more bluntly. “I don’t even know who he is anymore really. He hasn’t been in my house for two years.”

“We haven’t really talked about our relationship,” Kody tells her, to which Janelle gives him a sweet but sad stare. This man is beyond pathetic, but sweet Janelle still wants to let him down lightly.

“We have had so many conversations where I’ve said it’s done, we’re done, we’re not compatible. And he’s agreed, and he’s like, ‘yeah, it’s really sad.’ I don’t… like why are we talking about that? I feel like it’s almost like a diversion tactic.”

Kody continues to try and guilt Janelle into having some type of relationship with him, but it’s a little unclear why it matters so much to him. He didn’t value Janelle when she was in his life as his wife, but now he somehow does? Kody tells Janelle that he and Meri will “always be friends.”

“I’ll never say a bad thing about Meri… again.”

In his confessional, Kody says that he and Janelle talking about reconciliation is a “b******* pipe dream from both of [them].” Kody, Janelle has made it so clear, so many times, that she is not interested in being married to you anymore. The only one who has a “b******* pipe dream” about reconciling is Kody.

Kody then confirms what we all already know: Wanting to reconcile with Janelle has nothing to do with Janelle herself. It’s about him wanting to reconcile with her so that he can reconcile with their kids. It’s all a game for Kody.

“But I know that reconciling with her would require some kind of power game where I gave her all the power in the relationship. Which I think is fair, because I had it for so many years. But I’m not interested in that. I think it’s a fake discussion for both of us and the reason is because I think both of us, I’m telling you my heart’s truth, don’t want to be the one that’s accountable for breaking up.”

Kody loves to rewrite history. The only one talking about reconciling is Kody. Janelle has clearly moved on and made peace with it. Kody needs to make it seem like their break-up was mutual, but it wasn’t. Janelle got fed up and she left.

“He wants a wife that acts differently than I do. So it’s over.”

Janelle continues setting Kody straight, albeit with her sweet smile never leaving her mouth: “You complain about my independence and I will complain about your selfishness and self-absorbed, you’re a little bit.” When Kody asks if she only felt that way about him over the past two years, she responds, “Maybe you always were.” Kody sits there as though this is all news to him. Has he been watching the same show he stars on? Because it seems like he missed a few scenes.

Janelle then brings up the Sister Wives elephant in the room: he has no relationship with her kids, so she would never be able to reconcile with him.

“I’m always going to choose my kids.”

Janelle tells him (again) that she felt like Kody prioritized Robyn, which Kody continues to gaslight her about. In a confessional, Robyn says she feels that she always gets blamed for issues involving the other wives’ and Kody.

Kody Brown’s Friend Might Have Predicted The End Of Sister Wives

A friend of Kody Brown’s shared an opinion that eventually wound up reflecting reality for Sister Wives.

When Janelle brings up a past situation where she and Robyn had a discussion about Robyn’s home, and Robyn told Kody about it, and Kody blamed Janelle for it, Kody’s voice gets tense. “Don’t go down that road.” Is it any wonder Janelle feels like she can’t openly discuss their issues, especially if Robyn is involved? Kody shuts it right down.

Meri’s Birthday Present To Herself

After a commercial break, the show shifts to Meri. It’s her birthday and she’s finally going to get to see her carriage house at her AirBnB completed after a renovation, which Meri says is a huge birthday present for her. She plans to run her “online clothing business” (cough, cough, LuLaRoe) there while she also runs Lizzie’s Heritage Inn.

Meri is clearly embracing her newfound single life. It’s interesting that Meri says she and Kody split up officially “just about a month ago.” Their marriage was on its last legs for years, but Meri seemed to be the last to know.

“I’m grieving a loss of what I thought was going to be forever. That is just weird.”

The renovation is stunning, and one can’t help but be happy for Meri. The carriage house used to be a storage unit, but now it’s a trendy workspace with a gym upstairs. And even though Meri is involved in a predatory multi-level marketing scheme, it’s nice to see her feeling so empowered post-Kody.

Janelle And Kody’s Awkward Lunch Continues

Back at Janelle and Kody’s lunch, Kody continues contradicting himself. After just telling Janelle not to “go down that road” regarding the story with her and Robyn from years back, and Janelle explaining (in the same tone of voice you’d use when explaining something to a child) that because there are certain topics she can’t discuss with him, she can’t communicate her feelings and emotions effectively.

“But you can talk to me about your feelings and emotions,” Kody says. Sure, provided they don’t make Robyn look bad, Janelle can talk as much as she wants.

Kody doesn’t get it, and he never will.

“Janelle has a card, it says ‘victim’ on it, she likes to play it.”

They continue speaking in circles, until Janelle brings up wanting a spiritual release from Kody, which seems to anger him that he would have another “failure” in the eyes of his church. Again, he asks if Janelle thinks there’s a chance this could work. “I think you and I would have to be different people,” she says plainly.

Kody seems bothered by this, but Janelle sees right through him. She knows that he doesn’t want to lose her because of his ego, not because he really loves her.

“In some regards, especially coming from the culture that we come from, he’s a failure to have lost all his marriages,” Janelle says with a smile during a confessional. “Except for the one.”

Janelle and Kody start talking about what Janelle will get from the split. They go back and forth about whether she’d want money or land, and then Kody weirdly asks, again, “Do you want to try a love affair again?” to which Janelle just laughs. It’s unclear if Kody was joking, but he’s so delusional, he just might have been serious.

Janelle says she wants to move closer to the grandkids, to which Kody defensively asks why Maddie didn’t tell him she had another baby. Janelle tells him the kids are feeling estranged from him, and Kody again gaslights and obfuscates.

“They’re talking like I’ve done some kind of evil to them. I’m missing something here.” Janelle says there are lots of nuances to the situation and she doesn’t want to be in the middle. “Jealousy and gossip,” says Kody, as an explanation for why his kids aren’t speaking to him. “No, I think there’s a lot more to it,” Janelle says gently.

When Janelle brings up that she met with a lawyer, Kody looks further dejected, but in a confessional, he says that he believes Janelle just wants to screw him over.

“I’m bitter and I don’t care.”

The episode ends with a diatribe from Kody about how Janelle “betrayed” him and goes on about how she showed her loyalty to Christine, and not him. Kody is so beyond threatened by Janelle and Christine’s friendship. He can’t stand that they’re moving on without him. It hurts his ego, which is the driving force behind everything in Kody’s life.

Episode 9 of Sister Wives, “Coyote Pass Property,” airs on Nov. 10 on TLC, and the following day on Max and Discovery+.
